Klein follows Charpentiers Sans Frontieres, the "Carpenters Without Borders," on their first project in the United States. Since 2002 this group of skilled craftspeople has traveled the world to build using the old ways, restoring a medieval bridge at a castle in France and raising a hewn-truss roof on a blacksmith shop in Romania. In 2019 the crew came to the rural Maine coast to build a blacksmith shop for Mortise & Tenon Magazine. Klein documents the project from the sourcing of logs in the forest and their harvest using horse power, through peeling, hewing, scribing and cutting joinery w/ simple hand tools, to communal meals made from local ingredients and the raising of the frame, all in less than two weeks of labor. Color photographs and technical explanations of tools and tasks run throughout, alongside the words of the carpenters themselves and of modern philosophers and thinkers. Klein builds an argument that another way of working is possible, one that reawakens our hands and minds. An introduction by Francois Calame traces the origins of Charpentiers Sans Frontieres, and appendices cover team portraits and the rafter tail symbols carved into the frame, followed by further reading and an index. Mortise & Tenon published the book in 2020, edited by Michael Updegraff. Seller Inventory # C2NFnf-ES110226B6
