Photography has become incredibly popular, and for good reason: it's a fast-growing and accessible hobby whose results can be enjoyed by anyone. Cameras have also become increasingly diverse, ranging from DSLRs to mobile phones, with similarly varied physical sizes and capabilities. Consequently, each camera often requires a unique sequence of steps and settings.
This book therefore focuses more on concept than procedure, is highly visual, and is as camera and software agnostic as possible. We explore not only what to do with your camera, but also how and why your camera works the way it does. This book is not intended to be read straight through, but is instead intended as a learning companion that can continue to be referenced in conjunction with hands-on experimentation.
Learning photography isn't only about taking great photos, but just as importantly, it's about not being afraid to take creative risks which also result in far more bad photos. Learning and maturing as a photographer has become easier than ever due to the instant feedback made possible with digital cameras. This book can help you make sense of all these potential photographs, and when looking back at them critically, will hopefully provide ideas for countless others.
In this first volume, we introduce the core concepts and techniques that are necessary prior to and during digital image capture. Many of these topics eventually become second nature and part of your photographic intuition. These include the fundamentals of exposure, how lens choice affects creative control, and the influence of various lighting conditions.
The second volume explores all the key considerations after capture, including post-processing and maximizing digital image quality. The third volume explores more advanced topics in camera technology and specialty techniques. Currently volumes two and three are online at cambridgeincolour.com

As a scientist by training, Sean has been fascinated by the interaction between technological developments and the range of creative options available to photographers. Much of this fascination initially went into photographing the low-light scenes within Cambridge University during the course of his PhD, but has since grown to include explaining and similarly drawing others into the world of photography.
