Synopsis

The title, A Fine Ride, was inspired by Pat Cobb's youngest grandchild, Kyle, when he was about eight years old. Having been told not to ride a second-hand bicycle down a hill until he got used to it on level ground, he, of course, just had to try the hill and ended up “wiping out” about a third of the way down. When his dad rushed to see if he was okay, Kyle brushed himself off saying, “I didn’t do so good, Dad, but it was a fine ride while it lasted!” Seeing this as a metaphor for her life Cobb set out to share "a few stories about family and friends" and wound up with a sort-of memoir which includes both family history and some interesting reflections on her own "fine ride."

In her memoir, A Fine Ride, Pat Cobb gives an endearing and evocative account of growing up in the rural south, getting married and raising children, earning a doctorate, and having a distinguished career at Auburn University while remaining true to the God, family, neighbors, and country values she learned at home and in the Methodist church she attended. In the narrative she reveals an ability to present characters and events that become as genuine and honest to the reader as to the author herself. As for her distinguished career, I should mention that she was the first female Extension Entomologist in the United States. How did she pull that off? To find out, you have to read the book. What I can say, however, is that she did it her way.

About the Author

Patricia Ann Powell Cobb (Pat) is a native of Autauga County, Alabama, and grew up mid-way between Prattville and Posey Crossroads. She graduated from Autauga County High School when it existed, and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute at about the time it became Auburn University. She transferred to Huntingdon College in Montgomery where she earned a B.S. degree in biology, and a secondary school teaching certificate. Pat later earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in entomology from Auburn University. She taught high school and college students along the way, and returned to Auburn to work for twenty years as an Extension Entomologist-Professor. She taught seminars and short courses, and made many professional and motivational speeches. Her published work includes trade and popular magazine articles, book chapters, scientific journal articles, extension publications, and a co-authored book, IPM Handbook for Golf Courses. Pat is retired and lives with her husband, Dick, in the Auburn-Opelika, Alabama area.
