Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857) was one of the greatest of the German Romantic poets. Though under-recognized today, much of his verse, which often exhibits the nature of songs, has been set to music by such composers as Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Richard Strauss, among others. He is also noted for his novel Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (From the Life of a Good-for-Nothing).This collection has been compiled to fulfill a need. A decade or more have passed since a book of the poems of this famous Romantic poet has appeared in an English version. Every attempt has been made to emulate the music of Eichendorff's originals; and the result is a representative sampling of his verse that will serve as an introduction to this deserving but much-neglected poet. Although this book can function as a guide for students of German, it is also designed to be read by a general audience, the reason being that Eichendorff's sprightly spirit, his mainly positive outlook on life, his captivating imagination, enduring faith, and love of the earth and all God's creatures emanate from these pages.
