Synopsis

Here is the authoritative companion to Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, written by the daughter of the 340th Bomb Group’s final commander who was the seed for Colonel Cathcart in Catch-22. In rich and vibrant color, the full-blown illustrated characters of the original novel surge forward to face their true-life counterparts in the manner of Catch-22, sometimes irreverent, sly, subtle, and always funny.

This edition is enriched by the inclusion of a bold center section of full-color illustrations of Catch-22's fictitious characters contrasting with their true-life, wartime counterparts. Also introduced are films, untouched since World War II ended, that were discovered recently deep in the National Archives. From this footage, copious, never-before-published stills are here extracted of the 340th Bomb Group. Astonishingly, they contain substantial, rare, and touching appearances by Joseph Heller - warrior before writer.

Review

"Never has a great work of art like Red Badge of Courage or For Whom the Bell Tolls or War and Peace been so closely tied to real-life individuals and real-life events. Literary scholars will be pouring over your book for centuries to come looking for clues to the genius of Catch-22". -Daniel Setzer, 57th Bomb Wing historian/archivist

About the Author

Two life-determining factors were present when Patricia Chapman was born. The first was the influence of the seriously creative Gemini sign and the second was the highly mobile life style of her Air Force family. Both factors funneled into the creation of her two recently completed books, The True Story of Catch-22 Deluxe Illustrated Edition, and It's Your Call, an illustrated Young Adult work that addresses the life altering power of choices. Born in San Antonio, Texas, she grew up in an international environment. She attended three universities graduating from the Univ. of Colorado in Boulder. Post graduate schooling continued in Paris, France. She has held sculpture, drawing, and ceramic exhibits nationally and internationally including in Washington, DC, Virginia, Oregon, California, Paris, Vienna, and Madrid. Her books reflect the influences that came from this continually changing environment.
