I debated before I started this book. Should I write an Americana type book, full of idyllic descriptions of growing up in an Indiana rural community during the ‘50s, when innocence came naturally and the pace of life allowed for less self-consciousness? Or should I write a book about the concerns that have fallen under darker clouds: struggles with sexual identity, alcoholism, Vietnam, and a mood disorder? Then it hit me. Both aspects were flip sides of the same coin. Everything has been felt so intensely, the idyllic and the hell. I need to tell both sides of the story to adequately tell the other.
