9780996139038: A Slice of Life

Synopsis

Short story collection by Thom Gossom, Jr., actor and author. His memoir, WalkOn: My Reluctant Journey to Integration at Auburn University, is his story as the first African-American athlete to graduate from Auburn. A Slice of Life mirrors the first season of life, reflected in a newly integrated Alabama of the 1960s and 70s. Tommy will miss the big game if he doesn’t eat those dang “Cold Hard Grits.” A football dynasty permanently penalizes a father and a son in “Crimson Tide,” and a dimwitted army veteran has war flashbacks in “Everybody’s Crazy.”

Review

"Thom Gossom brings realism as an actor, author, and producer to all his work. Slice is a ...new example of his realistic, descriptive and sensitive portrayals of people and times he has known." -Dr. Susan M. Cooper, Dean, California State University Fullerton-Irvine "As a football player at Auburn University, Thomas Gossom turned pass receptions into touchdowns. He scores again with this collection of short stories." -Clyde Bolton, novelist and retired sports columnist, The Birmingham News "Thom Gossom, Jr. is a skilled writer who has a keen insight into himself, other people, and the times he has lived. In this first book of a trilogy, Gossom explores the 1960s when he was young and growing up in an American and Southern world rapidly changing around him. He recounts his adventures, sometimes through fictional characters, in anecdotal style and with the voice of a southern humorist yet with a serious lesson in the tale."-Leah Rawls Atkins, historian, Birmingham, Alabama
