Synopsis

This is the defining textbook on Character Analysis / Movement Psychology. Christopher Fettes (joint founder with Yat Malmgren, of the renowned Drama Centre London) offers an elegant and systematic journey into the extraordinary Laban/Jungian theory of Character Analysis / Movement Psychology. The work is designed for actors, dancers, directors, writers - and in fact, anyone with an interest in developing a psychological understanding of themselves, of others or of the characters they may be asked to play - in life, on the stage, or in front of a camera. Character Analysis is a powerful analytical method, incorporating Rudolf Laban’s theory of movement, and Carl Jung’s character typology, aided by William Carpenter’s expertise with language. The method was completed by dancer and teacher Yat Malmgren, with Christopher Fettes contributing a wealth of literary extracts to serve as examples; so producing a complete system for the analysis and development of character-types, on which the actor can rely when wanting to transform into a role. Christopher Fettes explores each aspect with wit and precision, and it is clarified by the analysis of copious examples of speeches by characters from a wide range of plays, and from literature. The book provides diagrams and charts to help summarise the information; with biographies, and a full bibliography. Colin Firth provides a foreword, describing the long-lasting effects that Movement Psychology/ Character Analysis continues to have on his work as an actor. Yat Malmgren and Christopher Fettes jointly founded the renowned Drama Centre London in 1963; they taught and further refined the method during the following 39 years that they ran the institution, and across Europe. The softback edition provides the same quality as the hardback original; 135 gsm paper, colour print throughout, and a sewn binding designed for years of use.
