Focused on a key stretch of ridge south of Ypres, this stitched hardback book in dust jacket compares the descriptions of each key event from British, French and German sources. The book covers the First Battle of Ypres with specific focus on the centre of the battlefield along canal and railway at Hollebeke. The German failure at this key point is examined in detail, comparing German accounts with those of the cavalry and Baluchis. This is followed by an account of the German attritional drive up the ridge, comparing contemporaneous French and German accounts. Then the French loss of Hill 60 in December, decimation of the Tunisian Tiraillieurs, French mine offensive on Hill 60, British fighting at The Bluff in early 1915 and the mine warfare and German pionier activity that followed. Each page is accompanied by a relevant photograph or map, 120 in all. The photographs were chosen as ones taken from a precise location identifiable today. Excepting a few field postcards and IWM material, the photographs are all previously unpublished. A Dutch translation of this book is available.
