Synopsis

Traditional lecture theatres were designed to enable large numbers of high-calibre students to hear expositions of knowledge and understanding. Students commonly listen to texts being read verbatim, without visual reinforcement or interaction. But lectures fail to cater for the wider range of students who are now entering universities because they treat all students as if they are equal, fail to ensure that knowledge is retained, and insufficiently engage students, resulting in poor attendance and feedback. Tiered lecture theatres are also inefficient because they cannot be used for other purposes. Now many UK students are required to pay large fees, universities must pay greater attention to student expectations. "Rather than confining students to a passive experience, we need to consider how to more fully engage students in learning activities. We need to think about ways in which we can disrupt outdated methods of delivering instruction to make way for methods that encourage full-participation for students in class." Andrew J Milne, CEO Tidebreak Inc. "With greater mobility, students have a choice in where they can work and tend to gravitate to spaces they enjoy - so quality of design matters more. New space models for educational institutions therefore need to focus on enhancing quality of life as well as supporting the learning experience." Shirley Dugdale, Principal - Dugdale Strategy LLC
