Outlines the development of the incandescent electric lamp from its beginnings in the late 1870s through to its demise facing competition from the compact fluorescent lamp and the rapid development of the LED lamp. Many books have been written relating to the individual development of different firms but this is an attempt to describe the early production methods, the effect of restrictive Acts of Parliament and patent restrictions. The photographs are from the author's comprehensive collection which he has donated to The National Trust for display at Cragside, the home of Lord Armstrong in Northumberland and the first major installation of Josephs Swan's lamps in December 1880. 504pp illustrated in black and white and colour.
