Synopsis

Tiny enough to hide behind a leaf, Min Barklin is winged, curious, and anxious. She lives with her two mothers, her brother, and their Bark clan in the canopy of a suburban gum tree-and, like all lumins, she is a tree-tender.

On the day she discovers she's a rare Intuitor-able to sense what's coming-her inner world grows much noisier. Voices begin to speak-bickering with her and each other, blurting out odd prophecies until they talk her into joining a rescue mission with a small, determined crew.

Far beyond her canopy, the ancient Silver Radiant Forest-a nursery for new life-is in danger. Zarklon, an underground power, has awakened and unleashed the Fearsome: a sentient firestorm bent on destruction.

Can Min's new gifts, and her chattering, intuitive voices save the forest before the Fearsome's inferno engulfs the forest?

From suburban branches to wild bush country, Min Barklin and the Silver Radiants is an adventure of courage, friendship, and self-discovery-inviting young readers to see themselves as tree-tenders: guardians of forests, and of the fragile ecosystems we all share.

About this title

About the Author

A lifelong lover of stories, Sandy found that becoming a storytelling coach after twenty-five years running a communications company was an exhilarating change. From 2008, she wrote and spoke widely-penning a business book, contributing to several volumes on entrepreneurship, and sharing stories about philanthropy, business, and the climate. Twelve years later, the next pivot revealed an awkward truth: being a storyteller was not an automatic stepping stone to authorship. Min Barklin and the Silver Radiants has taken Sandy on a five-year journey to learn and practise all she could about this mercurial and endlessly fascinating craft. The book is supported by a website that aims to build Min a clan of active tree-tenders, inspired by a worldwide community Sandy founded for a charity called Knit-a-Square. She told that story at TEDx Melbourne-to a thousand-strong, standing ovation.
