The workbook for the novel She Built Ships During World War II is intended to build vocabulary, structure, basic reading skills, and to encourage critical thinking and discussion about the issues introduced in the novel. Each chapter in the workbook parallels its chapter in the novel and presents the vocabulary, idioms, phrases, and issues of that chapter.OrganizationEach workbook chapter has eight sections. Sections A-D present and practice vocabulary. Section E is called Word Builder and addresses word forms, parts of speech, and structure. Sections F and G present and practice idioms and phrases from the chapter. Section H includes reading comprehension exercises on salient details of the chapter. Each chapter closes with a final section that offers big-picture questions based on the social, personal, ethical, and political issues raised in the novel. It asks students to write about, reflect on, and discuss the ideas, opinions, and questions that may arise from the reading.A few things to keep in mind:• Every fifth line is numbered for convenient reference.• In all Section H exercises, page numbers are given (in parentheses) where theinformation for the answers can be found in the text.• The vocabulary in the workbook is defined only within the context that itappears, even when a word has multiple meanings. This allows students to focusand learn contextualized vocabulary, and not to become overwhelmed.• In exercises A & D throughout the workbook, the correct vocabulary item fitsgrammatically into exactly what is underlined.• Vocabulary builds consecutively in the workbook. A word defined in an earlierchapter may be used later in a definition. Students are thereby given moreopportunities to learn and recognize the new vocabulary.• In the Word Builder section, sometimes grammar is introduced that is moreadvanced than the level. Students should not be expected to master it. Rather, it can serve as an introduction to support the learner's growing awareness of the language structure.
