In this 100th Anniversary Edition of Foot Prints-An Aid to the Detection of Crime for the Police and Magistracy by George Whitty Gayer originally published in 1909, has been completely reformatted, edited and annotated by Troy A. Lettieri, founder of the Special Operations Tactical Tracking Institute (SOTTI) to give the reader more historical insight to the subject of foot print forensics and tracking methods. Gayer was inspired to write this manual from his experience with indigenous trackers of India while working as a police official in the Indian Central Provinces. Gayer wanted a manual that police officials could use to aid in the identification and conviction of criminals while working in remote outposts. Gayer s foot print interpretation is based on the fact that all foot prints are unique to each individual. Therefore, the measurements of three lines and angles from four points are sufficient to make identification possible of a particular individual. Gayer's system of foot print interpretation is quite possibly the first book written on forensic tracking, which was predominantly based on Baden-Powell's work on tracking, scouting and observation techniques.
