Synopsis

Ziyarat al-Ashura is a commonly recited prayer in commemoration of the martyrdom of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (S), Hussain ibn Ali (a.s), and his companions at the battle of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram 61 AH (October 9th or 10th, 680 CE). This prayer was traditionally categorized under the title the Ziyarat of Imam Hussein(a.s.) on the day of Ashura --ziyarat means literally to visit and ashura means the 10th--which in the course of time became shortened to Ziyarat al-Ashura. This supplicating prayer can be found in some of the earliest sources such as in Kaamel al-Ziyarat by ibn Quluway (368 AH/ 979 CE), and Misbah al-Mujtahid by Sheikh Tusi (460 AH/ 1067 CE) who trace it back to Imam Mohammed al-Baqir (a.s.) and Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.). The most authentic chain of narration is the one offered by Sheikh Tusi , in which he narrates from Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Teyalisi s (259 AH) book. Allameh Mamigani, an authority in the study of Shi'a ahadith, claimed that the authenticity of this prayer was maqtu , meaning absolute; without doubt. Contemporary scholars such as Ayatullah Ali Sistani and Ayatullah Bahjat, not only approve of but also encourage its re-citation. This prayer has at times come under criticism due to its recurring theme on la'n or cursing, Yet the issue of la'n is found in several verses of the Qur an such as: "...upon them is the curse of God, the angels, and all of mankind." (Surah Baqarah: 161). Many Sunni scholars have decreed it lawful to curse those who killed Imam Hussein (a.s.), specifically the Caliph who ordered his death; Yazid ibn Mu awiya. They include scholars such as the famous jurist Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Suyuti, and Taftazani. Ibn Jouzi, a famous Hanbali jurist held in great esteem by ibn Taymiyyah, even wrote a separate book on the permissibility of cursing Yazid. Yazid himself cursed Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad, the governor of Kufa, for killing Imam Hussein--though it was a vague attempt at deflecting public condemnation. It s narrated from Imam Jaffar Sadiq (a.s.) that this prayer should be recited daily, if possible. Sheikh Ansari--who is honored with the title Khaatam al-Fuqaha wa al-Mujtahideen, the Seal of the Jurists and Legists--used to recite this prayer twice a day.
