Wally Dethlefs is no ordinary Christian. Ordained into the post-Vatican II church of the 1960s, full of hope and activism, he soon turned to work with students and workers, and to take up the cause of those flung out to the margins of society. Join Wally on his spiritual journey, and his sensitisation as a social activist, liberation theology devotee, and champion of Brisbane’s vulnerable youth. From his deadpan accounts of managing Kedron Lodge as a youth refuge, to his term as chaplain in Boggo Road prison, Wally’s story is illuminated by moments of grace, by his special blend of compassion and indignation, and by his call for justice for the disadvantaged in our society in the name of Jesus.
As soon as I started reading it, I knew I had a contemporary spiritual classic in my hands. Just Compassion is an honest-to-God, rough-as-guts, bloody-good autobiography introducing the theology of liberation to Australia through one man’s pains-taking, heart-breaking struggle to do justice to the battered and abused young people in our country who deserve better.
Just Compassion is for all those who want to find a way to engage our world with integrity, dignity and grace—and a wicked sense of humour.

Dame Quentin Alice Louise Bryce AD, CVO (née Strachan; born 23 December 1942) was the 25th Governor-General of Australia, holding office from September 2008 until March 2014. She was the first woman to hold the position, and was previously the Governor of Queensland from 2003 to 2008.[1] Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Bryce was raised in Ilfracombe, with her family subsequently living in a number of country towns around Australia. She attended the University of Queensland, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws, becoming one of the first women accepted to the Queensland Bar. In 1968, Bryce became the first woman appointed as a faculty member of the law school where she had studied, and in 1978 she joined the new National Women's Advisory Council. This was followed by appointment to a number of positions, including the first Director of the Queensland Women's Information Service, the Queensland Director of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, and the Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner in 1988. Her services to the community saw her appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988, and a Companion of the Order of Australia and Dame of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in 2003. In 2011, Elizabeth II invested Bryce as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order at Government House.[2]
