When I was eight years old, a coup broke out in my native country of Liberia. I don’t remember much about it. I remember watching a firing squad on TV. And I remember Mom saying that she was going to send me to the United States. About two years later, Mom put me in a little suit and tie, sewed $500 into my back pocket so I wouldn’t lose it, and stuck me on an airplane so I could live with my aunt in Virginia. Mom and my brothers, Archie and Ivar, would join me later. That was the beginning of my new life.
