Synopsis

Do you get reports with just numbers and have to struggle to find the diagnosis that makes sense? Do you know the diagnosis you want to use but struggle to find the exact wording and code number? The insurers now accept only ICD-9 diagnoses and the DSM codes are not always the same. Wish you had a simple and complete list of the psychiatric ICD diagnoses?

This tool compiles for you: ALL the ICD numbers with all five digits and their specifiers (when used), ALL the exact diagnostic labels with the exact capitalization and punctuation. Many that are not in DSM-IV but are still in common clinical use are in ICD. For example, 313.3 Sibling jealousy and 312.0 Undersocialized conduct disorder, aggressive type.

Some useful variations have been retained in ICD. For example 312 .1 can include Tantrums. You can enjoy finding gems like 313.1 Misery and unhappiness disorder. This list is likely usable beyond the ICD-10 implementation date (Oct. 1, 2014) because computers at payers can easily distinguish ICD-9 from ICD-10 codes.

This List is convenient and simple. Four full size pages, heavily laminated for cleanliness and durability.

These code numbers and their main (and often additional) diagnoses are from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification, Chapter V. The ICD often offers several diagnoses for one number. While most archaic and repetitive diagnoses have been deleted interesting ones are in Italics. Common ones are in green. Because ICD has only one Axis medical conditions are listed as separate ICD diagnoses.

Disclaimer: Entries are for reference use by trained mental health clinicians, not for precise diagnostic decisions or differential diagnoses and remember, the map is not the territory and spectra don't fit into boxes.

HIPAA requires ICD not DSM codes but ICD will not replace the DSM (published by the American Psychiatric Association) because ICD-9 and -10 are only lists of diagnoses and their associated numbers without diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses, rating scales, epidemiological or course information, etc. DSM-V's diagnoses are a subset of ICD-9's and match only about 70% of the diagnoses.

This List is an efficient and authoritative clinical tool. It will be kept for years and referred to often. Whenever a report arrives with only the code number the diagnostic label is necessary to make sense of it and no one memorizes the codes. Whenever completing any kind of evaluation, progress report, referral note, or almost any clinical document a precise diagnosis is needed. Many clinicians often shorten, recall wrongly, or distort the exact wordings. The wording of a diagnosis should be exactly the same as in the manual or on this list to prevent legal vulnerabilities and reduce risks. Because the exact code number, with all five digits, is required by all insurers and licensing authorities such as JCAH, using this list will save most clinicians from having to buy DSM. This list is a lot handier than a big book or even a little book (versions of the DSM). When you need the ICD-10, sometime after 10/1/2014 you can buy it in an elegant edition from The Clinicians ToolBox here on Amazon or at the The Clinicians ToolBox website.
