Quiet Courage: The definitive account of Flight 93 and its aftermath presents an accurate collection of facts regarding Flight 93 and everything that has transpired in Somerset County since that fateful day. Notable interviews featured in Quiet Courage include former Gov. Mark Schweiker, who spearheaded the recovery efforts at the site, as well as Ken Nacke, Jr., Gordon Felt, and Edwin Root, family members of the heroes on board UAL 93, who are currently involved in the memorial process. Additionally, Congressional pages, beginning their second day of work in Washington, D.C., describe in Quiet Courage the chaos that ensued as they realized that the Capitol Building was a probable target, and then the courage of the elected officials as America went to war to defend itself against terrorism. All inclusive in Quiet Courage are details of the 9/11 plot, the investigation, the recovery, the anthrax attacks, the Afgan War and the ongoing effort to create the National Flight 93 Memorial. Quiet Courage is well-organized, with additional facts and resources outlined in factoid boxes, time lines, and maps. The oral histories and vignettes allow the reader to experience the emotions of the people involved in the brave efforts of recovery following the tragic events of that day. Quiet Courage, along with the first book by the Kashurba, Courage After the Crash, is an important resource for historians, educators, and all Americans who want to understand the truth about Flight 93 and its aftermath.

On September, 11, 2001, many Americans were called to action in a variety of ways. Glenn J. Kashurba, M.D., volunteering through the American Red Cross, had what he called the great honor and privilege to lend some small bit of support to a group of incredibly strong and wonderful people, the families of Flight 93. As he rode in the first set of buses with family members to the crash site on Monday, September 17, 2001, he heard those amazing people already expressing their thanks to the citizens of Somerset County. Despite all of their grief, amidst the apprehension of seeing the crash site that claimed the lives of their loved ones, they kept repeating the mantra, I hope the people here know how much we appreciate what they ve done. At the same time, many Somerset County residents expressed profound gratitude toward the heroes for giving their lives to prevent an even greater tragedy. Courage After the Crash (SAJ Publishing, 2002) was published at the first anniversary of 9/11 as a memorial to the courage of the heroes and the strength of their families. Additionally, the book was a thank you to all of the thousands of people who, in ways big and small, helped in the aftermath of the crash.Quiet Courage: The definitive account of Flight 93 and its aftermath (SAJ Publishing, 2006) combined the oral histories from Courage After the Crash with those recorded through 2006. To that were added details of the 9/11 plot and what is documented to have occurred on board UAL 93. Glenn J. Kashurba, M.D. is a Board Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and nationally known writer, speaker and advocate for children and families. He was honored for his 9/11 work with the prestigious Catcher in the Rye Advocacy Award at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, on October 26, 2002. In 2005, the American Psychiatric Association recognized Dr. Kashurba for his contributions to the field of psychiatry by bestowing on him the title of Distinguished Fellow. Dr. Kashurba is the co-chair of a panel of nine experts who writes the popular parenting series Facts for Families for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). He lives in Somerset, Pennsylvania, with his three teenage children.

Dr. Kashurba, in Courage After the Crash, used first-person accounts to help us understand how a rural county in Western Pennsylvania responded to a disaster that, quite literally, fell out of the sky. Now, in Quiet Courage, Dr. Kashurba brings the story up-to-date with accounts from Flight 93 families and citizens of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, committed to establishing a permanent memorial to the heroes of Flight 93. Overlying these first-hand accounts are the details of what occurred on board UAL 93, the 9/11 plot and the ongoing investigation that are still front-page news.As with Courage After the Crash, the author will donate his royalties to charity. The Flight 93 Memorial will receive Dr. Kashurba's royalties from Quiet Courage. This is an American story using American voices showing American values at their best. ~G.
