Texas Ranger Benning is at odds with the Rangers because after sitting out three years in protest under Governor Ma Ferguson, he loses his time-in-grade. He is a veteran of the group under Captain Hamer who cleaned up Borger, Texas and who captured Bonnie and Clyde. But times and methods have changed and Benning finds it difficult to change with them. His old methods to capture a bank robber who leaves notes to him keeps him out of favor with his boss.

Robert Dean Anderson is a native of Missouri. He published his own newspaper at the age of nine, then went on to become publisher of two Missouri newspapers. He was a copyboy for the Kansas City Star and likes to mention he worked for Pete Wellington, the man Hemingway called his personal writing teacher. He spent fifteen years as a spacecraft engineer and a technical writer. He serves or has served on the board of directors of area arts councils, historical societies, writing guilds and youth literary projects. He lives at Lake of the Ozarks with his wife, Carol.
During the Great Depression, men are desperate for money. Some men are willing to go to extreme lengths to obtain it. In the Texasx Panhandle, such a man preys on small town banks bursting with the wealth of the oli boom. Corporal Benning of the Texas Rangers tracks the bank robber from town to town, following the clues left behind. Clues which implicate Benning and hint at the next robbery. A woman involved with both Benning and the robber has a difficult choice to make. Coming to the aid of the Ranger is an unusual group the daughter he never knew he had and her fortune-telling dolls. When the final robbery takes place, the thin line between the guilty and the innocent disappear.
