Synopsis

From a boy testing parachutes using neighborhood cats and building model aircraft, to a co-pilot of a B-17 who flew 34 combat missions over Europe, "Flying with Col. Chuck" is a poignant memoir of progress from boy dreamer, to teenage civilian pilot, to a 2nd Lieutenant with the “Bloody 100th” Bomb Group of the 8th Airforce in WW-II, and a life in both military and civilian skies thereafter. Colonel Chuck Gutekunst writes of his aviation experiences, the judgments that kept him and his fellow airmen alive, and friends made and lost in combat. (He was he only member of his original B-17 crew to complete an operational combat tour.) His tales of camaraderie, fear, and exhilaration will touch readers as the description “The Greatest Generation” comes alive. Col. Chuck celebrated his 100th birthday in February 2019. All proceeds from this book will be donated to the 100th Bomb Group Foundation.
