This book is a first-person account of a disaster on a solo hiking trip. Author Amy Racina was hiking in a remote part of King's Canyon National Park in California's Sierra mountains when she lost the trail. With no warning, she suddenly fell sixty feet, breaking both legs on the rocks below. She survived for four days and nights, battling pain, fear and exhaustion, pulling herself along with her hands and refusing to give up. She was miraculously saved, her calls heard by a man who was partially deaf. It describes her dramatic rescue as she was airlifted out, swinging helplessly from two straps, dangling fearfully beneath a helicopter high above the ravine where she had fallen. This is an amazing tale of despair, courage, and hope. It speaks of incredible strength and heartbreaking weakness as it details what one woman believed might be the last days of her life. It is a memory of the darkest of times and an affirmation of miracles.

Amy Racina has traveled all over the world by herself. Introduced to backpacking at the age of sixteen, Amy began soloing in her early twenties. She has trekked hundreds of miles through the wilderness that she loves, especially in the high country of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and particularly in Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks. She leads hiking groups, and works as a graphic artist.
Dear Reader,
It s 1 A.M. and tears are rolling down my cheeks as I read the final draft of this book as it goes to press. I ve worked in publishing for twenty years, and I ve read hundreds, perhaps thousands, of manuscripts, by some of the most influential and inspiring authors of our time. But I can t remember a time when a book affected me as deeply as Angels in the Wilderness has done.
The story in these pages is intense. You will laugh, you will cry, but from the first page, this book will hold you, and not let you go. As a story of human courage and persistence, it is unparalleled. As a parable that challenges us to find the best within ourselves, it is remarkable. As an honest and beautifully-written story, it is searing. And as a reminder that in the most desperate of circumstances, grace, humor, wisdom and the gentle touch of God s spirit are available, it is profound.
Let the magic of these words enter into your soul. Read this book, tell your friends about it, and help Amy and me make sure that it reaches the hearts and hands of many.

Angels in the Wilderness is author Amy Racina s first-person account of a fateful solo hiking trip in California s Sierra Nevada mountains. In a remote valley, after losing the trail, she fell sixty feet onto solid granite, shattering both her legs. For four days and nights she clung tenaciously to life, using all the spiritual tools and inner strengths she could muster. Battling pain, fear and exhaustion, she pulled herself along with her hands, and refused to give up even when her chances of salvation were remote. This is the story of Amy s fall, her miraculous rescue, and the remarkable healing journey she then began.
Amy Racina s story is a remarkable chronicle of disaster and hope. After falling sixty feet onto a granite boulder during a solo hike deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of Northern California, she kept herself alive by grit, determination and sheer willpower. Exhausted and in extreme pain, she dragged herself along with her hands, even though her chances of survival were grim. After four days, her faint cries were miraculously heard by another hiker. This book describes Amy s dramatic airlift out of the canyon, swinging helplessly from two straps, dangling fearfully beneath a helicopter high above the ravine where she had lain.
It is an amazing tale of despair and courage and hope. It speaks of incredible strength and heartbreaking weakness as it details what one woman believed might be the last days of her life. It is a memory of the darkest of times and an affirmation of miracles. It is a celebration of a life almost snatched away, of survival against the odds.
Many passages in the book were written in the weeks just after the fall, while the details were vivid in the author s mind. The account quotes excerpts from a journal she kept while hiking the trail. It recounts her struggles with multiple surgeries and extensive physical rehabilitation, as she fought to walk again despite her severe injuries. The text encompasses the deeper reflections that shaped the authors life after the fall, and concludes with her triumphant return to the wilderness just nine months later.
