Memphis Ribs
Gerald Duff has taken his considerable talent as a literary novelist and added his patented humor to produce his first mystery. Author Lee Smith says, "Duff is a Southern Elmore Leonard, only he's a lot funnier." An apt comparison. Memphis in May. The International Barbecue Contest, the Cotton Carnival, and now two murders. And it's all on the shoulders of homicide detective J.W. Ragsdale to solve both crimes before tourists start leaving in droves. J.W. and his partner Tyrone sift through an unusual cast of characters, ranging from black gangs dealing crack, to an heir apparent son of Southern aristocracy, and to the newly crowned Maid of Cotton. To make matters worse, someone is intent on turning out mass market bad barbecue, the unpardonable sin in Memphis. When J.W. takes the investigation to his native Mississippi Delta, what he finds could change his life forever, or end it. Author Roy Blount Jr. says, "It's got a detective who knows how to talk and what to do and an author who knows how to write. Between the two, they don't miss a trick."
the February 15, 1999 Booklist review of Memphis Ribs
Trying to mix crime and comedy is always a gamble - and one many writers lose. Duff, on the other hand, hits the jackpot, perhaps because he never appears to be trying. In prose as laid-back southern as a hound dog napping under the porch, Duff introduces us to Sergeant J.W.Ragsdale, Memphis cop and ribs fanatic. With Memphis preparing for its annual Barbecue Festival and Cotton Carnival, J.W. is charged with finding out who killed a drunken tourist who chose the wrong time to use an ATM. As the first crime points toward the notorious Bones family gang, a second murder occurs, sending J.W. on the road to his native Mississippi Delta to determine if the two crimes are related. With J.W.'s dry wit keeping readers chuckling, Duff folds a vivid picture of the South into a solid, well-plotted procedural. As sweet and satisfying as a barbecue dinner, without the fat. - Jenny McLarin
