Synopsis

Is it really carpal tunnel problems? -- or strained neck muscles. Is it really arthritic knees? -- or tight quads?

Find out with Range-of-Motion (ROM) testing -- a powerful tool for finding the source of pain and dysfunction of muscular origin. ROM tests are often ignored by therapists, but are an important part of Travell & Simons' protocol for treatment of muscular pain as described in their landmark work Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual.

Some of these tests will be familiar class exercises to students of yoga and martial arts, but here are the actual muscle names behind tightness and pain.

Set of 2 charts (22" x 34" on heavy paper stock with aqueous coating). The muscles most likely to inhibit a given motion are listed in order of likely involvement. All muscles are linked to fascial lines proposed by Tom Myers. Designed to be used in combination with pain charts such as Travell & Simons Trigger Point Pain Charts. For muscle lists, see Tom Myers' Anatomy Trains.

Review

Tests often reflect problems other than myofascial trigger points. But these reasons make these tests all the more important. If test results do not improve dramatically with myofascial therapy, the practitioner will know to refer the patient to another health professional to assess these potentially serious problems.

--Lucy Whyte Ferguson, Author, Clinical Mastery in the Treatment of Myofascial Pain

The charts paid for themselves on the first day I put them up. A patient looked at the pictures, tried some of the tests -- and scheduled more appointments.
"I need more work!" he said. --Louise Trickel, CMTPT

These charts are a great tool to help health care providers find specific trigger points and to document the dysfunction and its sources. --Devin Starlanyl, Author, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain
