Synopsis
In the first five centuries after the Crucifixion, a series of politically sponsored ecumenical councils were held to determine church doctrine. The winners at these meetings defined the nature of Christianity, the contents of the Bible, and acceptable interpretations of the gospel. The losers were labelled heretics. Though few modern churchgoers know about the men and circumstances which shaped those doctrines, the vast majority of Christian parishioners worship in accordance with the ecumenical councils -- and not necessarily with the teachings of Christ -- every day.
