Synopsis

There has yet to be widespread acknowledgement of Ben Cunningham's massive contribution to modern art in the area of color but it will come. Possibly no other artist has ever gained such astonishing mastery over the intricacies of color. Certainly, few artists in our time have extended its subtle, visual possibilities to the degree that he did. Although the ordinary threshold of color perception is about 480 colors, Cunningham could visualize almost 700. Unlike painters who think of pigment as "color," he regarded pigment as only a tool. His goal was to transform inert pigment into shifting patterns of light and shadow—"illusions." "Color without illusion," he said, "is barn paint." To Cunningham, the eye and the imagination were inseparable. "Seeing," he said, "occurs in the visual cortex not on the retina and we interpret images by drawing on our total experience and memory bank." The painter's goal, he believed, should be to enrich this experience by inventing new ways of seeing. This account of Ben Cunningham's life, work and theories as a painter and teacher includes 32 color plates and 24 black and white plates of his work.
