Scared Witless--the Use & Misuse of Fear, looks with some humor and irony at how our society manipulates us with fear and insecurity and how we buy into it--taking drugs for anxiety while searching for scary movies, roller-coasters and Xtreme sports. From products pitched based on convincing us that we would look terrible and smell worse without them, to the politics of insecurity, we are whipsawed by fears, often unrelated to any reasonable likelihood of their being realized. All around us Cassandras, of various stripes, cry out their apocalyptic prophecies of impending doom: The Sky is Falling. The Seas are Rising! The Economy is Failing! ! China Will Eat our Lunch! ! ! (But it's okay because it's probably filled with toxins) And my own personal favorite, the clarion call to passivity: IT MAY ALREADY BE TOO LATE! With politics cynically using xenophobia and homophobia, we are being trained to fear the "Other." That "Other" may change, but there will always be some Other to make us feel insecure.
