A Course in Conversational Indonesian is a comprehensive text suitable for language study in the classroom, or for individual study at home.

The course is based on the conversational language of Indonesia and is useful for students and travellers interested in learning the everyday language of the country. Equivalent Malay vocabulary is given where this differs from the Indonesian.

There are 25 lessons. Topics include greetings, making requests, identifying objects and colours, talking about the family, transportation, ordering food and drinks, looking for people and places, asking the time, requesting and giving directions, receiving and offering invitations, discussing cultural differences, talking about sickness and health, driving, marketing and bargaining.

Each lesson has a set of short presentation dialogues, a section on sentence structure, notes on language use and grammar, and detailed exercises. There are over 5,000 individual exercises. Each exercise is presented in a conversational context and drills the structures and vocabulary in the current dialogue, as well as reviewing the structures and vocabulary in previous dialogues.

Included in the text are 11 sets of review exercises of 40 utterances each accompanied by suggested answers, and an appendix of interactive exercises to further encourage communicative use of the language. New to this edition is a set of communicative exercises and word games for the Thematic Glossary.

The text also has a detailed introduction describing the format and use of the lessons, a section describing the sound system of Indonesian, and three glossaries: Indonesian to English, English to Indonesian and a Thematic Glossary which groups words by situation.

The presentation dialogues are recorded on one audio CD which accompanies the book.
LEVEL: BEGINNER
Recommended for learners with no background in Indonesian. When completed, the text will bring students to quite a sophisticated level of conversational speech.
