Synopsis

Recently bereaved, and encouraged by family and friends, Harriet decides to open her home to paying guests. Although successful, her business plans come to an abrupt halt at the start of WW1 as each of her grown up family play their part. Grateful for their company, her daughter Sarah and daughter-in-law Hannah move back home with their children. Letters bring long awaited news as son Jack joins the aircraft carrier Ben my Chree in Turkey and to his dismay his twin brother Tom finds himself in India. Surprisingly, Sarah s husband Anthony learns to fly and is the only member of the family to experience the horrors of France. This leaves Harriet s eldest son Ernest remaining in Woolston, working as a foreman at the recently opened Supermarine factory, building flying boats vital for the war effort. In fact, it s not long before Hannah and Sarah join him, to the dismay of Harriet and their husbands. As this saga unfolds, telling the story of Harriet s family s struggle through the war, two people keep her sane, her best friend Jane and her childhood sweetheart Edward, but the underpinning presence of Riduna, (Alderney) the island of Harriet s birth is forever drawing her home.

About the Author

Diana Jackson has written stories and poems all her life, but had her first novel 'Riduna' published in May 2009. A new edition of Riduna has recently been launched by Eventispress and it is now also available on Kindle. Diana's original inspiration for the 'Riduna Series' was the life of her Great Grandmother, who was born on the Channel Island of Alderney in the late nineteenth century. In fact, Diana's love for Guernsey and Alderney colours all of her writing, so that even during the darkest period of WW1 we sense the lure of the islands. Diana is motivated by her passion for social history and family history, allowing for her research to guide the destiny of her characters, who become as real to Diana as her own life. She weaves the lives of her fictional characters seamlessly through facts, gleaned from brief periods in history. When not writing, Diana teaches English and Business Studies part time to 16 to 19yr old students, which keeps her on her toes! Relaxation for Diana is gardening, often eating the produce of her labours, or following her husband's rock and roll band. Though Diana has plans for three books in the 'Riduna Series' and possibly a prequel, she is currently working on a memoirs and a murder mystery.
