About the Author

Born in Tipperary Ireland, I was thought how to fly-fish by my father on the banks of the River Suir. I learned how to tie flies from a very young age, and have always enjoyed tinkering around the edges and being creative. Some thirty years ago I moved to England with my wife and eldest son David, in search of work and managed to contine my passion for fly-fishing on its many reservoirs in the Midlands.I decided to write my first book after being made redundant in June 2008, and with the assistance of Peter Gathercole I completed the project and launched "A Passion for Trout" in my home town of Cahir in Ireland in May of this year.

From the Back Cover

MICK O'FARRELL-HAS been fascinated by fly-tying and fly-fishing since his childhood in Ireland. He was taught to fly-fish by his father on the River Suir, and spent subsequent years exploring the great loughs in search of wild brown trout. These formative experiences have led Mick to develop an innovative and much-admired style of fly-tying.
He left his homeland for England some 30 years ago and has since transferred his wealth of knowledge to the stillwaters of the Midlands where his thinking constantly challanges the accepted reservoir methods and flies.
Mick's inventive style of tying has earned him a fine reputation in the UK and Ireland, where he returns annually to fish on the loughs with the friends that are close to his heart.
He is a successful competition angler, winning the Munster Lake Championships in 2005 and 2006, captaining two winning Munster teams, claiming three Interprovincial gold medals and on three occasions representing Ireland at European and Home Championship level.
He also writes regularly in Trout and Salmon magazine, where he openly shares his fly patterns and approach to fishing, stimulating widespread discussion.
This book, which has occupied two years of mick's life, encapsulates his fishing techniques, his continually evolving fly patterns and a lifetime of angling experiences.

From the Inside Flap

Fly-fishing for trout is one of life's great passions and has been the motivation that helped Mick O'Farrell create a remarkable range of trout flies encompassing his three favoured disciplines:dry-fly, wet-fly and nymph. It has also provided the ipetus for writing A Passion for Trout-his first book.
It chronicles one man's journey from an eight-year old boy helping his father on the banks of the River Suir, to becoming a successful fly-fisher and fly-tyer in his own right. He has enlightened us with a rich diversity of fly patterns. More than 400 are illustrated in a series of coloured plates, each complimented with a full 'recipe' of the materials used - an important aid to the reader, allowing each fly to be tied exactly as the author intended. Additionally,in the section on Flies and fly-tying, there are step by step photo sequences showing in close detail how Mick creates four of his favourite patterns.
Threaded through the advice and flies and the techniques are persoanl anecdotes, some amusing and others with a more cautionary message. Any angler who might be tempted to throw caution to the wind when venturing out on a large lake, would do well to read the section titled, Behaving like an Idiot.
A Passion for Trout provides a comprehensive insight into modern fly development with an emphasis on an imitiative approach, and will appeal to stillwater and river anglers alike.
