This book is the first volume of two, written to celebrate the lives of the men commemorated on Flint’s War Memorial. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 the Population of Flint, North Wales was approximately 6,000. Over the ensuing four years almost 1,000 of the town’s men of fighting age enlisted to do battle in what became known as “the war to end war.” In total, 162 men from Flint would die in the conflict. The 83 men who appear in this first volume were not all born in Flint; those who weren’t had migrated to the locality from various parts of England and Ireland. They served in France and Flanders (The Western Front), Italy, the Balkans (Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Gallipoli/Dardanelles) and Egypt. You will discover where these men were born, who their parents and siblings were, who they married, when and where they died and where they were buried, if they had a grave at all. The individual valour of many of these soldiers won them medals. Some went to their graves with their courageous acts unsung – other than by their relatives and loved ones. But not all were saints! This book is also a vivid record of run-ins with the police, at home and in the army; men going absent without leave; and privates confined to barracks for being late on parade or for disobeying orders. The occasional domestic feud or County Court summons is recorded here, too, for good measure. Conscientiously researched by Peter Metcalfe and richly illustrated with photographs, the story of Flint’s Great War heroes of 1914-18 are told here through letters, newspaper reports and family stories that have been passed down through the generations. This is an affectionate record of their lives.
