Joint Winner of the Best Self-published Book for 2010, awarded by the David St John Thomas Charitable Trust, Southern Rails on the Isle of Wight Volume One is the first of two volumes that will form an illustrated history of Isle of Wight's Railways. Together they trace the story of the lines that formed one of the most loved networks of the British Railway system, from their birth right up until the present day.Written in a lively and informative style, they will appeal to both the enthusiast, and the general reader.
The volumes are lavishly illustrated with over 200 photographs in each, making use of the latest printing technology to integrate colour and black and white photographs throughout the book. They include numerous historical shots, many not previously published, as well as those which bring the story right up to date.
A particular feature is the inclusion of colour maps and plans, which cover the majority of the stations featured in the book. Also included are items of ephemera such as tickets, timetables, original plans etc., which help to bring the story of these railways alive.
Volume One concentrates on those lines which formed the constituent parts of the Isle of Wight Central Railway, and also the former Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport Company.
Volume Two is also now available.
