Synopsis

Across the wide spread of the bay formed by the Ribble Estuary, Southport and Lytham gaze at each other across a five mile stretch of sea which seems deceivingly less. In reality, of course, to travel by land from one end of the bay involves a journey of nearly 30 miles taking well over an hour, yet no bridge has ever been built across the river seaward of Penwortham in spite of a number of tentative plans. In the 19th century two small towns on the tips of the estuary, separately exploiting their situations facing the open sea, became the notable seaside resorts of Southport and Lytham St Annes.
