9780955710414: The Mother-Daughter Puzzle: A New Generational Understanding of the Mother-Daughter Relationship

Synopsis

From the sales desk to the boardroom, too many women feel as though they are “giving from a place of empty,” constantly putting their wants and needs last in a culture that expects them to give and never take. If this describes you, take heart! The source of your dilemma might well spring from the relationship you have (or had) with your mother, your daughter, or both.

In The Mother-Daughter Puzzle, Rosjke Hasseldine, an internationally recognized expert on the mother-daughter relationship, Huffington Post blogger, and Adjunct Lecturer at the University of New Hampshire, provides a step-by-step guide on how to connect the dots between what’s happening in your mother-daughter relationship and how society and your generational family treats women. Rosjke’s book teaches you how to map your mother-daughter history, an eye-opening way to help provide answers to your dilemma. From this mapping, you’ll also learn how to raise your entitlement to speak and be heard, and to challenge and change harmful sexist beliefs and cultural stereotypes, so you can enjoy an emotionally connected, mutually supportive mother-daughter bond.

“In The Mother-Daughter Puzzle, Rosjke Hasseldine explores one of the most influential relationships in women’s lives. Her stories vividly demonstrate the dynamic nuances of this grounding relationship, and how those dynamics shape the way women relate to themselves, their work, and how they engage in other interpersonal relationships. She challenges readers to assess the mother-daughter dynamic in a new way and engage in processes that foster equality and structure egalitarianism.”

Helen LaKelly Hunt PhD, author of And the Spirit Moved Them: The Lost Radical History of America's First Feminists.

"This is a very important book. It can help us all to understand the mother-daughter relationship and guide us to create a positive one. A must-read."

Gloria Feldt, former President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Co-Founder and President of Take The Lead, author of No Excuses.

Review

“If you’ve ever wanted to understand yourself better and enhance all of your important relationships then look no further than The Mother-Daughter Puzzle. Rosjke illustrates beautifully the significance of how relationships between mothers and daughters impact how we live, how we feel, how we love, and the world we live in ... Stunning.”

SERENA SIMMONS
Chartered Psychologist, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, Nottingham Trent University

“Rosjke Hasseldine has unique insights into the complex, hidden, and deep-rooted dynamics of mothers and daughters. This book enables readers to understand many of the generational issues, values, traditions, and personality variables that impact the mother-daughter relationship. The Mother-Daughter History Mapping tool helps women to sensitively examine their inherited emotional patterns and behaviors. The Mother-Daughter Puzzle is an important resource that energizes women to create greater joy, respect, and love.”

LOIS A. HERMAN
Coordinator, Women’s UN Report Network

“Bravo, Rosjke, for bringing our attention to this highly neglected area. This book is a must-read for all counselors and psychotherapists.”

LORNA MARCHANT

The Mother-Daughter Puzzle provides a beautiful roadmap to healing and forgiveness between mothers and daughters.”

GAYLE KIRSCHENBAUM
Emmy Award-winning filmmaker of Look At Us Now, Mother!

“This highly anticipated book is essential reading for professional women who will benefit from learning how explicit and implicit messages from our earliest role models affect the choices we make as we take on (or don’t) the leadership roles that greatly need our talents. As the foremost expert in this area, Rosjke provides valuable ideas about how to sort out lessons from our past and apply those that support our own unique aspirations.”

VANESSA DRUSKAT, PhD
Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, Peter T. Paul College of Business & Economics University of New Hampshire

“This is a groundbreaking book with huge potential for further research. It fills a gap in academic research on women’s empowerment by exploring the ‘from-within’ perspective. The author does not only unpack the poorly understood mother-daughter relationship, but also provides much-needed solutions.”

FATIMA SADIQI, PhD
Woodrow Wilson Global Fellow, Professor of Linguistics and Gender Studies, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Author of Moroccan Feminist Discourses

“This engrossing book takes us beyond the surface level with stirring stories and insightful connections between mother-daughter relationship conflict and how women are treated in society.”

SUSAN NEWMAN MANFULL, PhD
Social Psychologist, Creator of Provence WineZine & The Modern Trobadors

"Thank you, Rosjke, for the work you do and for a potent and humane response to the mother question. The Mother-Daughter Puzzle is a much-needed voice for women’s rights and mothers’ rights.”

VANESSA OLORENSHAW
Author of Liberating Motherhood
