Synopsis

In May 2005, Muhanned Cader, Thamotharampillai Shanaathanan, Chandraguptha Thenuwara and Jagath Weerasinghe each created a drawing. The artists then posted their drawings to one other artist in the group, who created a new drawing in response to the one they received. So marked the start of The One Year Drawing Project. This process of exchange continued until each of the artists had received and sent 52 drawings, with the project reaching its conclusion in October 2007.
This book brings together the exchange that ensued between the four artists in response, and as a consequence, to the initial four drawings. It includes all 208 drawings from the project, presented in sequence and in their entirety. As a book, the project documents an exchange of view-points - artistic and ideological - sustained during a period of violent conflict in Sri Lanka. A chronology, compiled by the artists, recalls the background of events against which this project unfolded.

Synopsis

This is an experimental publishing project that follows a 29-month period of drawing exchange between 4 of Sri Lanka's most important contemporary artists. The book relates back to the creation of 4 drawings that were simultaneously drawn (May 2005) and charts the exchange of responses that ensued between the artists in response and as a consequence to the initial drawings. In common with the technique of the Exquisite Corpse used by the Surrealists, "The One Year Drawing Project" belies similar outcomes of subversion and fraught association when viewed against the context of the current political climate in Sri Lanka - where all 4 artists live and work. A timeline of events, exchanged between the artists, provides a subtext to the volume of 210 drawings brought together in a single book.
