Synopsis

Mrs Rutter was a military BIGOT (BIGOT clearances worked on Allied staffs scattered around London and southern England), although she was a civilian she was given top level clearance and her papers were stamped BIGOT - for people with the highest security status. Mrs Rutter started work in the Experimental Drawing Office of HMS Excellent, Whale Island Portsmouth early in World War II. She was seconded to Vickers Supermarine, Designers of the Spitfire and Seafire for the duration of the war in the Design Drawing Office (where she was paid exactly the same wage as her male colleagues).
She was so highly regarded that her bosses felt they could trust her to calm the nerves of the officers just three days before the invasion of northern France.
At the personal request of General Montgomery to attend a special event on the eve of D-Day. This event, due to special security cover, has never before been revealed to the public. Mrs Rutter, acting as Hostess, met all Commanding Officers D-Day including Lt Cmdr. Omar Bradley and is now believed to be the last remaining person at that function. During retirement Mrs Rutter became Chairman of the Central Region of the Spitfire Society.

The book includes four other personnel of Supermarine who have given their accounts of the bombing of Southhampton including a nurse at Haslar.
Mrs Rutter was brought up in the Denvilles area and now lives in Emsworth. Mrs Rutter has researched her parental lineage - Broughton from 1614 and Towler from 1391, also the marriage of John Knox, The Reformer, to Isabel Stewart takes the family line back to Marjory Stewart of 1316. John Broughton, the "Father of Boxing" is a family relative. (The Broughton are local to this area)
