Fly Fishing is massive, a subject discussed within the
paragraphs of many books, keenly debated in magazines and an obsession to
millions across the globe. The Essential Guide to Fly Fishing is a journey
into this world, viewed through the eyes of full time fly fishing
instructor, Nick Hart. Broken up into the nuts and bolts that make the
whole machine work, Nick has attempted to sort the wheat from the chaff,
creating a quick reference style guide that details subjects including
casting, knots, fishing tactics and a helpful section on stocking a fly
box. If it ends up in your tackle bag, bruised and battered, tatty and
scribbled upon, adorned with the odd coffee stain, then it has done its
job!
When I first sat down to tap out this introduction I began by
waxing lyrical with poetic descriptions of fly fishing and what it means to
me as an individual. I then hit the delete button, because if you are
reading this book, you don't want to hear that! Instead I hope that after
you have finished this short section you will begin a journey into the
totally cool and mesmerising world of fly fishing.
The Essential Guide to Fly Fishing is a nuts and bolts look at the subject
through my eyes, if it ends up tatty in your tackle bag, scribbled upon and
adorned with the odd coffee stain, it has done its job! Built around many
blissful years of teaching fly casting and fishing on beautiful West
Country venues I hope that you find the systematic approach beneficial.
Sure, fly fishing is a massive subject and sometimes it can be made to
sound complicated, but let's be honest, fish are not that intelligent!
However, they have evolved instincts and habits that every angler must
study and understand if they are to be successful, glued together by the
most important skill of all, casting. Without degenerating into an obvious
sales pitch, I would recommend that all potential or practicing fly anglers
spend some time and money on professional fly casting tuition. This little
book is merely a memory jogger!
Enough from me. It's time to stock the fly box, grab the tackle pack and
head for the waters edge. Fly Fishing, it's essential!
