Synopsis

"The Doomsday Fun Book" is a collection of editorials and other short articles illustrated by Richard Willson of "The Times" who has been cartoonist extraordinary to "The Ecologist" since it started in 1970 - as well as to the international environment movement as a whole for much of that time. Since 1970, "The Ecologist" has published 243 issues - and many have been illustrated by Richard Willson. A very much shorter version of this book was produced by us some twenty years ago, but this one is incomparably more elaborate and is best seen as a new book. The editorials are serious stuff - usually very worrying, often very depressing and sometimes infuriating. However there is a humorous side to the sheer ineptitude of our political and industrial leaders and of their pathological inability to tell the truth on the horrific implications of the policies they impose on us. Richard Willson, we think, has mastered the art of expressing this in his satirical drawings. The editorials in "The Doomsday Fun Book", with few exceptions, are presented in chronological order, usually, though not always, with the specific cartoons that originally accompanied them. Though "The Doomsday Fun Book" covers but a small number of the social and environmental issues The Ecologist has dealt with in the last thirty-three years, it makes one thing clear: our fundamental belief that Progress and its most hideous manifestation, economic development, are the cause of, rather than the solution to, the ever more daunting problems we face today, which we can only hope to solve by moving our society in the very opposite direction to that in which it is being made to move today. That is the real message of "The Doomsday Fun Book".
