About this title

From the Inside Flap

All roads really do seem to lead to Merthyr, from a punch-drunk boxer to an alien with the face of Norman Wisdom. Each author has written with his or her own unique voice. The focus moves from gritty reality and historical fact to the supernatural and comic surrealism.

These stories reflect a culture that has been built on a history of hardship and empathy, spirituality and pragmatic necessity, revealing a particular sense of humour and temperament, at ease with both tragedy and comedy. The influence of a rich heritage combined with the contemporary impact of globalisation, dot com, speed texting, reality TV, cholesterol multinationals, music television, alco-pops and 24 7 shopping. All roads still lead to Merthyr, with hope for the future. A twenty-first century centre for the south Wales valleys.
