‘The closest approach…’ is a full colour, authorised history of one of the oldest and most respected companies in hi-fi.
Since 1936, Quad has led the field in hi-fidelity audio. Milestone products such as the Quad II power amplifier and the ESL-57 have found their way into the history books as the most significant hi-fi products of all time.
Today with over 3 million customers world-wide, there is a huge enthusiast base, and market, for Quad products old and new. This book gives the background and design philosophy of all these products, from the people that were involved at the time. Two previous Managing Directors give their take on the events of the time and industry personalities, from retailers to reviewers. All give their personal stories of a relationship with the brand that to many, defines high-fidelity.
Technical chapters include a complete description of the theory behind the milestone products. Contributions from E.A.R.’s Tim De Paravicini and Valve aficionado, Gordon Hill analyse a depth of innovation and understanding of practical electronics design that is rarely paralleled in modern design.
A series of appendices include technical papers from Peter Walker himself and his senior engineers which highlight the no-nonsense, logical approach they adopted and which set Quad apart from its competitors.
The contributor list is like a who’s who of the Audio industry and a series of stunning new photographs, archiving Quad’s entire product history, completes the package.

About the Author
Ken is an American-born, UK-based audio journalist whose articles have appeared in over 120 different magazines and newspapers in more than 20 countries. They include The Absolute Sound, Fi, Listener, Suono, Stereophile, The Financial Times, The Independent, Stereo & Music, Audio Review, Hi-Fi Review, The Gramophone, Audio, English Homes, Sound & Vision and Ixos & Hi-Fi.
After working as Assistant Editor for Stereo-The Magazine, Ken joined Hi-Fi News & Record Review in 1983, where he has served ever since, latterly as Senior Contributing Editor. Ken also writes about high-end audio for Robb Report and is a columnish for Inside Hi-Fi & A/V. A collector of old hi-fi components, Ken owns 'at least a dozen pieces of rare and collectable Quad gear' and is especially partial to the ESL-57.
