Duncan fought with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Scotland) and was captured by the Japanese in Java. He spent the rest of the war is prison camps in Indonesia and Japan. Rattray lived and Los Angeles and received a radio message from Duncan to let his family know that he had survived. Much of the story is based on Duncan's letters.
