This, the official HMS Victory CD-ROM, tells you everything you want to know about the ship, including her history, the men who sailed her and how she fought in battle. Using the CD-ROM, you can explore at your leisure all aspects of this unique 18th century warship using hundreds of images, historic documents and much more.
You can even explore parts of the ship that are not normally on view to the public. The level of detail that the enthusiast has access to is incredible, but thanks to the simple navigation function, it is still easily accessible for those who are looking for less depth or are perhaps new to this marvellous ship.
The CD-ROM contains hundreds of colour images, and is recognised as being the largest colour image archive of Victory ever published in a single, unified source. It also includes interactive cross-sections, 360-degree immersive virtual photography, animated battle plans and full period music supplied by the Royal Marines School of Music.
There are six main sections that cover all aspects of the ship:
1. The Virtual Tour: A deck-by-deck tour showing areas not normally seen by visitors. It includes interactive cross sections to help you navigate around the ship, 360-degree immersive virtual photography and full colour images, along with details relevant to the part of the ship you are exploring.
2. The Fighting Ship: Covers all the weapons on HMS Victory from the great guns to small arms. This section also shows how the ship was organised in battle and how she fought with devastating effect.
3. Battle of Trafalgar: Victory’s part in this famous battle is described using extracts from the ship’s logbook. The battle is demonstrated graphically by use of the animated battle plans.
4. The Crew: Meet the men who sailed the ship and who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar. This section covers how each man lived and what they did, ranging from Nelson himself to the ship’s boys.
5. History and Construction: Tells you about life at that time and about the previous ships that carried the name ‘Victory’. This section then explores in detail the construction of HMS Victory and her history before and after the Battle of Trafalgar.
6. Sailing the ship: What 42km of rigging 5,468 square metres of sail could do for the ship! How she was navigated and how she performed different manoeuvres used in a variety of situations ranging from sailing in battle to anchoring the ship.
The CD-ROM was produced in collaboration with HMS Victory and the Royal Naval Museum. Proceeds from sales of the product are shared with the ‘Save the Victory’ fund, which exists as a registered charity in order to raise funds to help maintain and restore this historic warship.
