For his first exhibition in the UK, Jorge Pardo has bought a house in Mexico - a dilapidated structure located in Merida. Over the coming months he will effectively rebuild the structure, reconstructing it and eventually furnishing it with Pardo designed tiles, floors and other decorative elements, inspired by the local culture. Transformed into a functional sculpture, the house/artwork will remain part of the landscape. Though based in Mexico, the house will be part of the exhibition as the galleries at Haunch of Venison will be filled with an array of new work by Pardo, including lamps, paintings, drawings and cut-outs. Featuring an essay by Liam Gillick- It is it, Is It Not: Reclaiming Contingent Space.

About the book >.>.> In Jorge Pardo Haunch of Venison, Christiane Schneider explores the intricate relationship between urban design and human behaviour within the context of modernist trends. The book delves into the complexities of contemporary urban environments, highlighting how these conditional spaces subtly influence our actions. Schneider critiques the transformations resulting from urban restructuring, which occur at a pace often overlooked in many neo-academic analyses. The discourse draws attention to a shift in public spaces over the past thirty years, where critical texts have, at times, served as a means to create new forms of designed predation rather than providing genuine critique or warnings about impending consequences. This trend signals a problematic oversight of the actual impact that aesthetic changes have on public perception and interaction. Schneider posits that the growing victory of speculation over structured planning has led to a heightened aesthetic specificity in areas that were once communal, yet this evolution often lacks attention when scrutinised in detail.A poignant example presented in the book is the erosion of the planned public walkways linking the Barbican development in the City of London to the surrounding area. These original pathways are being replaced by encroachments associated with new private office developments, illustrating the tension between public accessibility and private interests. Schneider?s analysis calls for a deeper understanding of these ongoing changes, urging readers to consider the ramifications of neglected connections in urban planning. "Jorge Pardo was born in Havana, Cuba in 1963 and studied at the University of Illinois, Chicago and received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Pardos artwork explores the intersection of contemporary painting, design, sculpture, and architecture. Employing a broad palette of vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and natural and industrial materials, Pardos works range from murals to home furnishings to collages to larger-than-life fabrications. He often transforms familiar objects into artworks with multiple meanings and purposes, such as a set of lamps displayed as both sources of illumination and as freestanding sculptures, or a sailboat exhibited as both a utilitarian, seaworthy vessel and as a striking obelisk. Working on small and monumental scales, Pardo also treats entire public spaces as vast canvases. Pardo engages viewers with works that produce great visual delight while questioning distinctions between fine art and design." ISBN 9780954067144 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 450.
