Focusing on nine of the most prominent landowning families in Ireland's Garden County of Wicklow, this beautifully illustrated book features many rare and carefully sourced photographs. Turtle begins with a well-crafted study of the Viscounts Powerscourt and their neighbours, the Earls of Meath and Wicklow. Among the other characters under investigation are the epic lives of three different Erskine Childers, General Dennis from County Wicklow who commanded the artillery at El Alamein, the girl from Rossanagh who inspired Mary Shelley to write, the clergyman who taught the Bronte s father how to read, the geologist from Baltinglass who made radio contact with Australia before World War One, the botanical genius behind the gardens at Kilmacurragh, the Glendalough man who took on the Zulus, the Madame of Humewood whose father surrendered Paris to the Germans and the playboy Earl of Wicklow who became an intimate devotee of Dublin pubs in the 1950s.

The Landed Gentry & Aristocracy of Co. Wicklow
Following on from the success of his Kildare volume, Turtle Bunbury now turns his attention to nine of the most prominent landowning families in Co. Wicklow. Beautifully illustrated with many rare and carefully sourced photographs, Turtle begins with a colourful study of the Viscounts Powerscourt and their neighbours, the Earls of Meath and Wicklow.
The historical cast of characters contains a constant stream of surprises. General Dennis from Baltinglass commanded at El Alamein. His father invented a radio and made contact with Australia before World War One. Laurette Tighe inspired Mary Shelley to write a fairy tale. Her cousin taught the Bronte s father how to read. The epic lives of three different Erskine Childers are brought under the spotlight. The Actons produced a botanical genius, the Bartons of Glendalough had a son who took on the Zulus, the Madame of Humewood was inextricably bound up in the fall of Paris to the Nazis, the Howards of Shelton Abbey sired Billy Wicklow, an intimate devotee of Dublin pubs in the 1950s.
