Synopsis
In this interpretive translation of the Five Scrolls, the variety and scope of the Bible is apparent, both as a religious text and as a work of great literature. In the Song of songs, the yearning for love is combined with a fine expression of eroticism, and the Book of Ruth is the great short story. Lamentation reveals the heartbreak of a prophetover the ultimate disaster of his people - the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem. Ecclesiastes is a philosophical treatise, bordering on cynicism, but still offering hope that, amidst the vanities and tears, youth, love, companionship and wisdom can still bring joy to human life. S for Esther, here is, surprisingly, a fantasy comedy.
