This is the story of a unique Boys' British School in Hitchin. Through the stories of its seven masters, the development of the school is traced from its beginnings in an ancient malthouse in 1810 to a crowded 20th century 'council' school.
And through this history, the development of elementary education is explained, from the pioneering 'monitorial' teaching of Joseph Lancaster to the more familar teacher-led classroom methods in use today.
Finally, there is another story - of how the the School was saved from redevelopment and is now The British Schools Museum, bringing the history to life.

This book began as a local history book, but as published it will appeal to student teachers and anyone interested in the history of education.
We added a number of 'postscripts' to some of the chapters. During our research we looked for the personal stories behind the history and were delighted to make contact with descendants of our first master, many of whom live in Australia.
We also discovered what happened to some of the boys who became the first pupil teachers at the Hitchin school.
We think this all adds interest to a book that we are all very pleased with.
