Synopsis

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder is a complex and often misunderstood condition, affecting children, adolescents and adults. It is one of the most common and important disorders of childhood. Its difficulties vary widely in both their range and severity and include problems with concentration, impulse control, hyperactivity, motivation and time awareness, often leading to school failure, expulsion, emotional, behavioural and social problems. To ensure effective treatment for the estimated 1-2 per cent of the population with ADHD, three critical areas must be addressed. Firstly, parents, teachers and professionals must become aware of the possibility of ADHD. The symptoms can mimic other medical and environmentally related conditions, which has made accurate recognition difficult. Secondly, the reality of coping with ADHD in its many forms, both for the individuals with the condition and those around them, must be acknowledged and understood. Finally, there is a need for a holistic approach to the management of ADHD to ensure the most effective resolution for individuals.

Until recently, the situation in the UK has been complicated by the almost exclusive use of a predominantly psycho-social approach to the treatment of children's learning and behavioural problems, which has seldom adequately dealt with the main symptoms of the condition. This has encouraged the view that all children's behavioural problems are the result of parenting and environment. In this work, Dr Kewley presents an overview of the condition based on the broader internationally recognized approach to ADHD, which takes account of its biological elements, and includes medication as an appropriate management option. Part by part, the volume provides a practical guide to the process of dealing more effectively with ADHD, from initial recognition, via the accessing of an assessment and diagnosis, through to effective management strategies for parents, teachers and professionals to help resolve individual problems and realize the true capabilities of those with ADHD.

Intended primarily for parents, teachers and professionals directly involved with children with ADHD, this book will also be of use to administrators and policy-makers in determining service provision both for the individual and the wider society.
