In curriculum terms this book could be used simply as a resource to implement the school's PSHE policy on Loss and Death. It could also be used in an emergency by a teacher with an individual to help focus private talk at a time of crisis and later. You might find that you could more effectively utilise multiple copies of the book- (perhaps 6 copies for a small group) to help children work on their social skills using this text as a focus for group discussion. Aspects of the National literacy Strategy could of course be addressed using this text to help promote work on: - personification, - inference, - personal writing, - illustration, and - the use of metaphors. This is a book which has a great deal to offer children of all ages. It is a "not so simple" picture book! However you choose to use it, remember that it should be used sensitively and selectively. It offers a unique and valuable insight into the feelings associated with bereavement while leaving the reader with a positive outlook for the future.
