It is predicted that in the morning of Wednesday, 11th August 1999, darkness will descend in Cornwall and Devon as the Sun becomes a smaller and smaller crescent of light and disappears altogether. A total eclipse of the sun is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and this book will help the reader get the most out of the event.

As guides to modern wonders go, surely the cheapest and, surprisingly, one of the best, is Pam Hine's 28-page guide to southwestern Britain's forthcoming total eclipse. Her pamphlet summarises most of the vital whys and wherefores of the event. It also boasts some of the better maps and diagrams. Its attempt to cover myths and legends in a single page was foolhardy however and, in a manner suiting the subject at hand, a thinnish veil should be drawn over the picture of the dragon on page 19. An excellent short bibliography covers the science and observation of this and other eclipses and includes a list of Internet resources bafflingly ignored by other, glossier guides. --Simon Ings
