Synopsis

The Green Frog service, so named after the "frog marsh" palace outside St Petersburg for which it was destined, was made by Josiah Wedgwood in 1773-4 by order of Catherine the Great of Russia. It consists of a dinner and a desert service for 50 people with a total of 952 pieces of which 750 survive. Each is decorated with exquisite hand-painted views of England, Scotland and Wales. These views provide an extensive, unique, and hitherto unexplored record of the landscape, gardens and architecture of 18th century Britain, giving the service historical and topographical importance. It is made in Wedgwood's famous cream "Queen's Ware", and painted in sepia. This book catalogues every piece that was made, the painted views are identified and sources traced. Some 500 details from the service are included.
